Summer Reading Challenge
Hot weather is something many of us look forward to but it can pose a health risk to some people. With high temperatures predicted to continue, there’s lots you can do to help keep yourself and your loved ones cool.
Top tips to beat the heat:
- keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
- if you’re going to exercise or walk the dog, do these when it’s cooler, such as in the morning or evening
- keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains
- if you do go outside, cover up, wear a hat and sunglasses, seek shade and use sunscreen
- drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake
- check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell
- know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
- carry water when you’re out and about.
We’re also urging you to stay safe around open water. It’s tempting to go for a dip to cool off in hot weather but it can be a risky thing to do. Look at the Water Safety Code from the Royal Life Saving Society. It will equip you and your family with vital lifesaving knowledge to keep you safe, in, on and around water:
