Derbyshire Now – 22nd May 2026 Edition
One of our longest serving catering assistants is celebrating 50 years in the job.
Dilys, who joined the county council on 20 May 1976 aged 27, has worked her entire career at Fairfield Infant and Nursery School in Buxton.
Over five decades, Dilys has witnessed huge changes in preparing school meals – from the equipment she uses to changing menus and nutritional expectations.
But at the heart of it all is her love for looking after the children and ensuring they are well fed.
To honour her dedicated service, the school threw a party in her honour.
Dilys, a mum and grandmother, has also been nominated for a lifetime achievement from the Jamie Oliver School Meals Awards.
Having served multiple generations, including her own children and grandchildren. Dilys is truly the ‘grandmother of the community’, cherished, trusted and recognised by all.
